Our friend Tom Silvestri, wrote this entertaining piece for the Richmond Times-Dispatch regarding the i.e.* Start-Up Competition!
The Greater Richmond Chamber is hosting an Entrepreneurial Trilogy this Spring, and Tumblr will be sponsoring the third part of the event—the Richmond Regional Start-Up Competition! This will give RVA start-ups a unique chance to be evaluated by a panel of expert judges, and the winner will be given the title of the Region’s Next Best Start-Up! This event will take place in late June. The other two parts of the Trilogy are a Patent Powerhouse workshop and an Idea Mash-Up, where entrepreneurs will be able to discuss and flesh out ideas with other awesome people.
This is all part of the Greater Richmond Chamber’s i.e.* effort, which fosters start-up growth and success here in the River City! The event begins with the Patent Powerhouse on March 27. Other dates are forthcoming. Visit the i.e.* website for more info on this awesome event!
In June 2011 we launched the i.e.* movement to transform this city from a civil-war attraction into a nationally renowned hotbed of creative talent. At the i.e.* launch event, we exchanged ideas with innovators on the front lines of their industries. We heard some weird stories. We learned about invention. We learned about reinvention. We shared our stories. We made something the world has never seen. We became inspired, motivated and energized. We became proud of our town.
We made people in Richmond hopeful! We were named 2nd on a short 5-item list in a richmond.com article,
“Five Ways 2011 Made Us Hopeful About RVA’s Future.”
CBS Sunday Morning News featured RVA yesterday as the Capital of Tacky Christmas Lights. Another way we express our creativity here in RVA!
As requested, here are the presentation slides from last night’s SHOP CLASS with designer Lauren Boynton and yogi Kelly Trask exploring yoga as a metaphor for design and creativity.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for a relaxing evening!
View the i.e.* sustainability brainstorm results from our launch on 6/23 here.
Here’s to you, to us, for what we ignited here today.
Here’s to those who will join us along the way.
To those who can see and feel and smell the excitement simmering just under the surface of this city.
To those who could leave, but choose to stay.
To those who walked away from asshole bosses to go out and play.
Here’s to thinking outside the box, kicking the box, creating an origami kite and flying the box.
Here’s to Richmond changing, growing evolving. Kicking and screaming but going… to the next level.
Here’s to the imagineers, the ideators, the creators, the producers of beauty in all forms.
We are the makers, we are the shakers, we dance to a rhythm, and soon everybody’s booty starts bouncing.
We cannot be dismissed, we will not be ignored.
Call us crazy, maybe we are crazy.
We tippy-toe and stomp and prance and careen along the line of genius.
We prod and we prick and we produce…the New Richmond, the future Richmond, Creative City, Idea City, Innovation Town, Gotta-Do-it-Here-and-Tell-Everybody-Else-in-the-World-About-it-Town. Our town.
Are we crazy enough to think we - along with Richmond’s vast network of subversive innovator/artist/creatives can change this town and make it better?
Hell yeah. Believe it.
Now, drink up and go out there and make something happen!
